Hotels Had Their Best Year Ever in 2015

Date: 1st of January, 2016

Occupancy rates hit an all-time high as the hotel industry looks ahead to new innovations. Hoteliers may be worried about losing business to home-rental sites, but some just-announced news is giving them a reason to smile: According to Hotel News Now (via the Calculated Risk blog), hotel occupancies had their best year ever in 2015. Over the year, average weekly occupancy rates were 65.9 percent. That's a 1.1 percent increase over 2014 and an impressive 11 percent higher than 2009, the hotel industry's worst year on record since the Great Depression. The news is particularly well-timed, as hotels normally have lower occupancies in January following the New Year's holiday weekend boom. The average profit made per room is $46.37.

So, what does this mean for you the traveler? Hotels have wised up to apps , which helps match last-minute travelers with available hotel rooms, usually for a discounted rate.

Of course, it's way too early to know if 2016 will be as successful as 2015, but the bumper year should yield benefits for travelers as much as hotel owners and operators. Guests should look out for more tech innovations, with everything from hyper-customization to robot staff on the road to becoming industry standards. And, if prices are still too high for your taste, you can always split a room with a total stranger. Happy New Year!
